The Top Ten Inexpensive Ways to Keep Warm in Winter

Baby, it’s cold outside! Rosy cheeks are cute but you’ll soon want to warm up when ol’ Jack Frost has been nippin’ at your nose. Here are ten fun and inexpensive ways to beat the winter chill.

10. Warm Bricks. This is an old-fashioned, cheap way to keep those toes toasty. While you are cooking dinner, place a brick in the bottom of your oven. Wrap it in towel and put it at the foot of your bed. It will keep you warm all night long!

9. New Life for Old Socks. You can recycle socks by using them as forearm warmers. No one likes cold wind up coat sleeves. So cut off the sock at the ankle and pull them on. You can easily slip them into your coat pocket with no one the wiser.

8. Wear a Nightcap. Yes, you may feel silly and you may have to fight an urge to start reciting ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, but it’s worth a bit of chagrin. Our bodies lose an astonishing 30-35% of our heat through the head.

7. Insulate Electrical Outlets. Very often, electrical outlets do not have a lot of insulation surrounding the plug. Put your hand in front of the plate. If you can feel air coming through it, unscrew the panel and fill it with insulation.

6. Throws. Throws are small blankets that are typically inexpensive and can be easily kept in all rooms of your home. Instead of cranking up the heat, just be sure several are strategically located.

5. Let the Sunshine In! No matter what the temperature is, when it is sunny outside, be sure to let the light in. It will, of course, naturally heat your rooms. Just be sure to shut blinds and curtains once the sun goes down.

4. Microwave Rice Socks. Place dry rice in a sock and microwave for several minutes. Like the brick idea, you can place this in your bed to keep your toes toasty, or warm up your hands (or anywhere else) when you feel chilled. Sprinkle some lavender in with the rice for a wonderful, relaxing aroma.

3. Let the Kids Make a Fort. Kids complaining about the cold? Try this perennial childhood favorite. Throw some blankets over some chairs or other furniture, let them put pillows, blankets, or sleeping bags inside. The blanket will insulate the area and they’ll have a fun, wintertime campout. (You might even want to crawl in there with them!)

2. Whip Up Some Irish Coffee. After the kids have fallen asleep in their fort, pack them off to their real beds for some adult time. Irish coffee is a blend of whiskey, coffee, brown sugar and cream.

1. Grab Your Partner. Sharing body heat is the best, and most fun, way to warm up. Maybe this is why the month for the highest number of births is August!
